Celebrate: Life, Liberty And Beauty

Aug. 30, 2002

Three-thousand American flags will be unfurled by 2,000 volunteers along San Francisco Bay next weekend as a tribute to those who lost their lives on Sept. 11th. It is a project by a Chinese American artist who hopes the work will bring people together. ABC7's Arts and Entertainment Reporter Don Sanchez reports.

They've put up the tents and are getting together the exhibits for the 50th Annual Sausalito Art Festival this weekend. One artist's work is so big, it covers the side of this building. Pop Zhao's panels of American flags are a preview of the tribute he will unveil on Sunday, Sept. 8th.

His Sept. 8th work is "Celebrate: Life, Liberty & Beauty," a memorial to the victims and survivors of Sept. 11th. Three-thousand red, white and blue panels are bordered in five colors that signify our diversity. Each panel with a blue figure, the symbol of freedom. It will require the help of 2,000 volunteers.

Zhao grew up in China, but he has lived here for 14 years. Classically trained, a pop artist, and he has embraced performance art, earth art. Panels of red dragons stretching 6 and a half miles along the great wall last year. Done in support of Beijing's Olympic bid. It is the longest artwork in the world according to the Guinness Book of World Records. And when this performance is over, he hopes its message will not end. He is financing this by selling his artwork. Sept. 11th. if you would like to volunteer to be part of the celebration project, contact Pop Zhao at his Web site, www.tibetmoon.com.
